Even if Messi’s World Cup championship shirt sells for $10 million, it still won’t break the record
Famous auction house Sotherby hopes the number 10 shirt of captain Messi who won the 2022 World Cup will sell for 10 million USD. However, if sold at this price, it is not as good as other legendary shirts.
The jersey currently holding the record price is the jersey of American basketball legend Michael Jordan that was auctioned in September 2022, also in New York, for 10.1 million USD, while the jersey number 10 worn by the legendary Maradona in the 2-1 win over England in the quarterfinals of the 1986 World Cup, the match in which Maradona scored with the “hand of God”, sold for 9.3 million USD in London in May 2022. It is worth mentioning that these record shirts were all organized by Sotherby auction house.
Sotherby is also storing six of the seven shirts that Messi wore at the 2022 World Cup matches that helped Argentina win the World Cup for the third time. This time, Sotherby auctioned the shirt Messi wore in the final defeating France in the penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw in 120 minutes, in which Messi scored twice.
The proceeds from the auction of this shirt will mostly go to the UNICAS Project Fund, chaired by Sant Joan de Deu. UNICAS supports the children’s hospital in Barcelona, mainly this hospital is financially supported by Messi through the Messi Foundation. This auction of Messi’s legendary shirt will take place in half a month, from November 30 to December 14, 2023.
